Under the Surface: A Solid Foundation
A great website isn't just about how it looks on launch day — it's about how it performs, protects your business, and serves every visitor over time. Here's the technical groundwork my work is built on.
My experience and the right tools — put to work for you
I work with a range of proven technologies and choose the right one for each project, rather than forcing every job into the single system I happen to know. For a straightforward site that keeps things simple and affordable; for something more demanding, a foundation with the power to match. Either way you get full control of your own content afterwards — updating your site is about as simple as writing a document.
I build primarily on well-established, open-source technologies. This eliminates hidden licensing fees, keeps your ongoing costs predictable, and ensures you aren't tied to a single software vendor or locked into a rigid software-as-service platform.
And where a project needs more than any off-the-shelf system can offer, I write the code myself — HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript and modern frameworks where they fit. That's the difference between a designer who can only install what already exists and a developer who can build exactly what your business needs.
SEO built in from day one
Every site I build comes ready to be found: proper meta descriptions, a sitemap submitted to Google, structured data where it helps search engines understand your site, and the technical SEO groundwork in place before you launch. That's part of the build, not an upsell.
For measuring what happens next, the choice is yours. Standard web analytics is included in your project — I'll set up Google Analytics if you want it, or, if you'd rather not hand your visitors' data to Google, a privacy-friendly alternative like Matomo or Umami. These are self-hosted, so they take a little more setup, but your analytics stay entirely your own. It's the option I choose for my own site.
Accessibility done right
Sensible accessibility — readable contrast, image descriptions, clear structure — is built into how I design, for every site. And when you need to go further, whether your audience depends on it or you're legally required to meet the WCAG 2.2 standard, I offer full accessibility testing and optimisation. It's a subject I know inside out.
Privacy handled properly
Once your site collects enquiries, takes bookings, or processes payments, data protection matters — and getting it right is mostly a matter of doing the technical groundwork properly. Every project includes a thorough, clearly written privacy policy and a cookie consent banner that actually works: it holds tracking and third-party scripts back until your visitor agrees, and lets them opt out or withdraw consent just as easily.
I'm not a lawyer, but I'll make sure you understand your basic responsibilities and that your site meets them on the technical side. More on getting GDPR right
